Too Many Pages
Involving service users to make services better
"Too many pages..."
Ring any bells?
For some of us it's a recurring nightmare...it isn't sheep that pass before our eyes as we struggle to drop-off to sleep; it's consultation documents, White and Green Papers, Assembly Briefings.
It's enough to reduce you to tears and drive even the best of us to hide under our desks!
But what if you have a learning disability? You might find reading difficult. You might not be able to read at all. You may feel like hiding under your desk - if you have one.
Or, as one service user told us...
"If there's too many pages, I can.t be bothered, so I put it in the bin..."
Such refreshing honesty!
So, Learning Disability Wales asked her and others who use services, how organisations like ours can get better at involving people.
We hope that we have come up with something that is very practical - without too many pages! Something that will help us all to understand what we should be doing and how we can do it.
It is written with the needs of Learning Disability Wales and it's member organisations in mind, but the ideas are universal and can be adapted to a wide variety of situations.

When Life's Not Fair
How many times have you said that?
It usually begins in childhood...and the answer you were given?
"Life's not fair!"
So, you learn to keep quiet, because somehow you know that is what people want you to do.
But, the inequalities that you see do not go away…a family with no food, a man with no shoes, the woman without a home…and you know that it cannot be right to keep quiet.
Finally, you learn that life isn't fair…but you also learn that you do not have to keep quiet. You do not have to accept these inequalities.
If inequality is created by people…it must be people who have the power to change things!
When Life's Not Fair is an accessible guide to how lobbying and campaigning can be used to achieve equality and rights for people with learning disabilities.
