The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is a new law which is to be used to help and support people who are unable to make some decisions for themselves. This workshop will specifically look at how to help and support someone to make important decisions about their lives, and what systems we can put in place to ensure their decisions are respected.

Course Aims

The workshop will introduce you to the Mental Capacity Act and its functions. It will provide in-depth information about the working parts of the act and how they impact on us as individuals and as professionals in our day to day lives. We will specifically look at how to locate and access the act to enable carers, people with learning disabilities and professionals to find and access the information needed to be fully informed and to make the best use of the Act.

Designed for

This course is designed to be accessible for everyone, particularly people who live and work with someone with a learning disability, people with learning disabilities and also advocacy services.

After the course participants should be able to:

  • Access the act and understand what tools it has attached to it for making decisions and assessing capacity
  • Have a basic understanding and awareness of the act and its functions
  • Be aware of how established statutory principles in care and treatment are affected by the Act
