Lobbying & Campaigning
Creating a Wales that values children and adults with a learning disability means that Learning Disability Wales has a key responsibility to work with policy makers and statutory agencies, at Welsh, U.K. and European level. Our range of member organisations gives us a unique insight into the barriers that confront children and adults with a learning disability. We use this insight and seek to improve policies, or create new ones where we can identify gaps.
We also promote the special interests of the voluntary sector, and
the special contribution that it can make to civil society in Wales.
To pursue our mission we therefore participate in many networks and
meetings.
Influenced by feedback from our members, the Learning Disability Wales
trustees have agreed our campaigning priorities for 2007/08. These
are:
Disabled Children Matter Wales
To work with our core partners, Children in Wales, Contact a Family and Mencap Cymru to obtain more support for disabled children. For more information click here.
Young People 14-18 years
To work with partners in the Access to Employment group to get more vocational person centred training and work experience opportunities for young people. For more information click here.
Commissioning and Values
We want to work with partners in statutory and voluntary agencies to strengthen commissioning practice in social care and to ensure that practice is underpinned by an improved commitment to a clear value base and quality provision.
We will also be giving support to initiatives to reduce the extent of ‘out of county’ placements of individuals.
Learning Disability Wales Blog
We now have our very own Learning Disability Wales blog. Here you can keep up-to-date with our lobbying and campaigning – as well as other events and activities – through the work of our Director Jim Crowe and Assistant Director Kate Young.
